Self Love as Medicine | The Doctor’s Farmacy with Dr. Mark Hyman
How about seeing self love as medicine?
If you’ve seen the film The Secret for example, or read the book, then you’ve also heard at least some of the stories out there of people who’ve healed from serious illness using the power of gratitude, positivity, and laughter. So then you might wonder, as I do, just how far could self love go towards healing us — physically as well as mentally.
There is so much to the mind-body connection that we don’t yet really understand. But if you look in the right places, there are examples of this kind of healing everywhere. And certainly, when we look at the physical health of those who have survived traumas, we do see a correlation with both mental and physical illness.
I love the bio-psycho-social approach, which really looks at the person as a whole and includes the context of their life and experiences. It gives us so much more context to work with as physicians and healers.
When I started writing The Real Self Love Handbook, I did so knowing that there was a huge need for the lessons in there. It’s that essential process of self acceptance and giving yourself permission that we need to re-learn as busy, stressed adults in an unforgiving society.
I say un-learn, because I think we had it, or at the very least had elements of it, early in childhood. Of course, as we grow up, society begins to shape the way we think, and self love begins to ebb away, replaced by a world of ‘shoulds’ and guilt.
So could you use some self love medicine in your world? I recently had the chance to share what I know about it with Dr. Mark Hyman on his podcast, The Doctor’s Farmacy! I’m so excited to be able to share the episode with you now — watch the replay here!
